Curries from the WORLD! Wonderful book covering curries with loads of vegetarian and meat options. This is one of my favorite Madhur Jaffrey cookbooks and one of my favorite cookbooks in general. The recipes are thoughtfully written, clear, and easy to follow. She has an excellent variety of recipes encompassing diverse flavors and preparation techniques. The recipes don't take too long to prepare and are well worth the effort. I particularly appreciate the unique theme of this book and the historical and cultural information included with the recipes. This book deserves all its accolades - I am slowly trying all the recipes. The narrative and ingredient info are a pleasure to read. The book is beautiful- a stitched binding on heavy paper that lies flat without breaking. This would be a perfect gift for anyone who loves to cook. The curries are all very different and absolutely delicious. The recipes are not highly complex - written to make it easy.I always wonder when I read a book that seems to have been written specially for me. This book covers history of curries through ages and provides recipes from ages ago to modern cuisine. It covers almost all continents, every place "Indians" settled and had to adapt their cooking with what was available on the spot. As well as recipes "stolen" or adopted and adapted by the British or the Japanese. Recipes adapted by Tamils who settled in Malaysia, Biharis who settled in South Africa, others who settled in Guyana, Caribbean, Burma... Each of them you will be wanting to try as soon as possible. With this book, you'll have a solid background of Indian immigration trough time and countries, with origin and history of each recipe as well as the recipes properly speaking.Thank you!Interesting and thorough history section and delightful recipes. I bought this book last week and have made three curries from it already... the Thai paneng curry brought a tear to my eye in many ways. I can see myself cooking entirely through this book! Every page has something I want to make, and I daresay I will be entertained in the kitchen for years to come.I was lucky enough to have a friend from the UK host a curry dinner using the recipes from this book. I was blown away by the authenticity of the curries and the ease with which she was able to make them. I was that taken with the quality of recipes I bought my own copy. I haven't been disappointed.Seriously, if you want to taste authentic curries without having to travel to Asia, try this book. Just make sure you buy fresh herbs and spices. I recommend buying smaller amounts, so that you only use what you need. That way the spices don't go stale on you.As the wonderful people in Indonesia and Malaysia say...Selamat Makan!(Good eating!)My mouth is watering just reading the different recipes. Can't wait to try them all outI gave this as a gift to my grandson for his 26th birthday and I know he likes it a lot!The word bible in the title isn’t hyperbole - this is one of the best and most comprehensive curry recipe books I’ve come across. It’s a joy to use, features curries from countries around the world and is superbly written and illustrated. The book contains many recipes (about 150) from countries around the world including India, Pakistan, Thailand, Kenya, Japan and even the UK and USA. They’re easy to use though certainly not for those wanting a fast and super quick weeknight meal. I love to get down cooking one of these recipes when I have a bit of time off and can dedicate an evening to cooking. Some of the ingredients may be difficult for people to get a hold of but that’s to be expected for authentic recipes. Alongside recipes Jaffrey includes fascinating cultural and historical backdrop of the recipes includes. There’s also a section dedicated to special ingredients and techniques which really help you to elevate and improve your cooking should you be that way inclined. In addition to all this, the book's illustrations and images are absolutely stunning making it a visual spectacle as well as a culinary one.The book is clearly meticulously researched and while it obviously doesn’t contain a comprehensive selection of curries from around the world it does show an excellent representation. The results are delicious and authentic. I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone interested in curry and this will serve as a useful and much used reference book in my kitchen for years to come.5 stars. Fantastic! Get this book.If you found this review useful in anyway please let me know by pressing the “helpful” button below :)This is a perfectly decent collection of curry recipes, but calling it an 'ultimate curry bible' is just hubris. To warrant such a title, it would seriously need more a lot more recipes and a more serious discussion of techniques and variations. As it goes, this has a selection of recipes from around the world, many of which are perfectly decent.I'd say that her selection of ingredients is more aimed at people cooking to entertain than people cooking family meals. There's not many bone-in or skin-on recipes, and I think that's a shame. Also, while I've enthusiastically collected her books since I was a young man in the 1980s, I increasingly find the details of her recipes unnecessarily fussy, adding in additional steps that I cannot for the life of me understand the reason for. It's an OK purchase, but I had expected a lot more.I bought Madhur Jaffrey's excellent recipe book in the seventies/eighties but unfortunately the dog also found it tasty!I bought this one recently, I suppose expecting it to be less 'global' in its selection of recipes. The book itself is good but it's not what I was expecting, hence my disappointment.I'm also wondering what the words "Ultimate" and "Bible" are euphemisms for because they're not words which I would feel honest in using here.Madhur Jaffrey is my Indian Cookery hero. My husband is Pakistani and when I married him 42 years ago, I didn't have a clue how to cook curry. Although he tried to help me, Madhur Jaffrey's books came to my rescue and even my husband's friends were oooh'ing and ahhh'ing over my dishes and asked me how I made them! Now THAT is success! All these years later, my cooking is still relished by our friends. Thanks Madhur! If you are a curry lover this book is A MUST. I cannot praise the book enough. Curry recipes from around the world -SUPER. Not only superb recipes for menus, excellent tips on powder and paste mixes and historical "backdrop" I liked this book so much that I have bought several as gifts for friends and families. If you love curries then BUY THIS BOOK!!!
